The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement for the population analysis of Big Cypress National Preserve white-tailed deer herds. The project aims to determine deer population trends, identify variables accounting for temporal and spatial changes, and provide recommendations for future monitoring and management decisions. The recipient will be responsible for estimating deer abundance, confirming the collapse of the deer herd, determining the effects of physical and biological variables, and recommending management actions. The NPS will provide logistical support, compliance and permitting assistance, and historic data.
Key aspects of the project include:
• Estimating deer abundance and population dynamics
• Confirming the collapse of the deer herd and determining the probable cause
• Identifying environmental and anthropogenic factors influencing deer population abundance
• Recommending management actions for a healthy deer herd
• Providing techniques for future monitoring of deer populations
