Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is seeking a commercially available ultra-fast nanoindentation system capable of performing nano- and micro-mechanical characterization under environmental conditions representative of the lunar surface. The system must include an integrated vacuum chamber, cryogenic operation, and controlled heating. It should support high-resolution nanoindentation, ultra-fast mechanical property mapping, scratch and micro-friction testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, fatigue testing, and multiscale operando measurements. The proposed system should integrate all necessary capabilities within a single commercially available platform. Key features and requirements include: • Integrated vacuum chamber with high-vacuum conditions of at least 10⁻⁴ mbar • Cryogenic operation down to –150 °C and controlled heating up to +100 °C • High-resolution nanoindentation and ultra-fast mechanical property mapping • Scratch and micro-friction testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, fatigue testing, and multiscale operando measurements • Single commercially available platform with all necessary capabilities • 12-month warranty • Delivery by December 31, 2026, to NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.

Budget estimate

$200,000 – $500,000

Given the complexity and specialized nature of the ultra-fast nanoindentation system, the budget for this opportunity could be substantial. The system's capabilities, including cryogenic operation and high-vacuum conditions, suggest a high-end laboratory instrument. The fact that NASA is seeking a commercially available system implies that the budget may be lower than if they were seeking a custom-built solution. However, the system's advanced features and the requirement for a 12-month warranty suggest a budget in the range of $200,000 to $500,000. Factors influencing the likely payment range include the system's technical capabilities, the vendor's reputation and experience, and the level of competition for the opportunity.
