The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking industry input on the design, construction, infrastructure, and operation of a scalable, high-performance data center optimized for AI and compute workloads. The data center should be capable of training and operationalization of multi-data Large Language Models (LLMs) for scientific and national governmental missions. The initial production readiness is targeted for 2028, with potential future expansion. The facility must support mixed AI training/inference workloads with stringent security, compliance, and availability requirements.
Key aspects of the project include:
• Data center facility infrastructure requirements, such as tier level, physical security, and structural requirements
• Compute, network, and solution options, including cluster architecture, density, and growth
• Sustainability and resource efficiency, including target Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) metrics
• AI-powered operations, monitoring, and automation, including tools for optimizing site metrics and predictive maintenance
