Description

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) has released its annual omnibus Research Announcement, Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) – 2022. This program element, Laboratory Analysis of Returned Samples, is one of the individual program elements within ROSES. The opportunity is for the analysis of returned samples from space missions. Proposals may be submitted at any time, pending certain eligibility timing issues related to resubmissions and duplicate proposal avoidance. Awards will be made as grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, and inter- or intra-agency transfers, depending on the nature of the work proposed. • The typical period of performance for an award is three years, but some programs may allow up to five years and others specify shorter periods. • Proposers must be affiliated with an institution at nspires.nasaprs.com/ and, in general, NASA provides funding only to US institutions. • The opportunity is open to organizations of every type, Government and private, for profit and not-for-profit, domestic and foreign (with some caveats). • Tables listing the program elements and due dates, the full text of the ROSES-2022 solicitation, and the "Summary of Solicitation" as a stand-alone document, may all be found on the NSPIRES website.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $2,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as the document does not provide a specific award amount or range. However, considering that the typical period of performance for an award is three years and the opportunity is for scientific research and development, a reasonable estimate for the budget could be between $500,000 and $2,000,000. This estimate is based on the assumption that the award will be a grant or cooperative agreement, and the budget will be spread over the three-year period of performance. Factors that may influence the likely payment range include the scope of work, the number of awards made, and the budget available for the program.
