Description

The National Science Foundation is seeking research collaborations focused on the mathematical and theoretical foundations of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The goal is to establish innovative and principled design and analysis approaches for AI technology using creative yet theoretically grounded mathematical and statistical frameworks. The research should aim to understand the capabilities, limitations, and emerging properties of AI methods, as well as develop novel design and analysis principles for current and next-generation AI systems. Some specific research goals include establishing a fundamental mathematical understanding of the factors determining the capabilities and limitations of AI systems, developing mathematically grounded design and analysis principles, and encouraging new collaborations in the interdisciplinary research community. • The research should focus on the most challenging mathematical and theoretical questions aimed at understanding AI methods. • The development of novel, mathematically grounded design and analysis principles for AI systems is encouraged. • The research should yield explainable and interpretable models that can enable sustainable, socially responsible, and trustworthy AI.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $1,500,000

The estimated funding for this opportunity is $8,500,000, with an award ceiling of $1,500,000 and an award floor of $500,000. The actual budget may vary depending on the number of awards and the specific research proposals submitted. The factors that may influence the likely payment range include the number of eligible proposals, the quality of the proposals, and the availability of funds. Given the estimated funding and award ranges, a reasonable budget estimation for a single award could be between $500,000 and $1,500,000.
