The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement to the Institute for Bird Populations for the project titled "Effects of a changing fire regime on birds at Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks". The project aims to increase understanding of the role of the fire regime in shaping individual bird species' distribution and abundance in park ecosystems, enhance managers' ability to predict the effects of fire management policies and actions on individual bird species, and strengthen managers' ability to incorporate avian habitat needs into fire management plans. The project will analyze avian point count data from the Sierra Nevada Inventory and Monitoring Program's avian inventory and long-term avian monitoring program, in conjunction with existing fire regime data, to model the response of dozens of bird species to variation in the fire regime across the parks. The project will produce at least one manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, a summary technical report, and an informational brochure.
• The project will be conducted over a period of two years, from September 15, 2018, to September 14, 2020.
• The total anticipated award amount is $43,345.97.
• The project will be funded under the Cooperative Research and Training Programs – Resources of the National Park System (CFDA #15.945).
• The Institute for Bird Populations is uniquely qualified to perform the activity based on their experience in application of methods and their consistent implementation of a monitoring protocol over time to reduce error.
