Description

NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center requires two custom, high‑precision, vacuum‑compatible X‑ray beamline slit assemblies for a new reflectometer system. The effort calls for a 4‑blade slit (30 mm × 30 mm aperture, 1 µm step, tungsten‑carbide blades, DN100/40CF flange) and a 2‑blade slit (8 mm × 8 mm aperture, 1.016 µm/0.508 µm steps, tungsten‑carbide blades). The vendor must design, fabricate, test, and deliver both assemblies, ensuring ultra‑high‑vacuum compatibility (< 1 µbar) and providing integration support. Delivery is expected within 6–8 weeks of contract award, with work performed off‑site and shipped to MSFC, Huntsville, AL. • Precise mechanical motion (≤ 1 µm positioning) and ultra‑high‑vacuum (≤ 1 × 10⁻⁶ mbar) requirements. • Custom tungsten‑carbide blades with specific knife‑edge angles (0.5° and 2°). • Delivery to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center within ~2 months; no on‑site construction required. • Sole‑source intent toward JJ X‑RAY A/S, but capability statements are being collected to assess competitive options.

Budget estimate

$200,000 – $500,000

The project involves design, precision machining of tungsten‑carbide blades, high‑vacuum preparation, testing, and integration support. Similar custom precision‑instrument contracts at NASA typically range from a few hundred thousand to roughly half‑a‑million dollars, depending on material costs, machining complexity, and testing. Therefore a reasonable estimate is $200,000 – $500,000. Factors influencing the final amount include the exact quantity of material, any required tooling, and the level of on‑site support.
