Description

The Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) will issue a firm‑fixed‑price solicitation for the detailed design, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, testing, and delivery of 194 Electron Storage Ring (ESR) D2 dipole magnets plus one first‑article prototype for the DOE’s Electron‑Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The contractor must provide complete design packages, perform structural, electromagnetic, and thermal analyses, fabricate high‑quality laminated‑steel magnet cores, design and build tooling, conduct first‑article verification, and deliver all production magnets within 104 weeks of award. The effort includes extensive documentation, bi‑weekly progress reporting, multiple design reviews (PDR, FDR, MRR), and strict quality‑assurance compliance (ISO‑9001, BNL‑QA‑101).

Budget estimate

$50,000,000 – $100,000,000

The contract involves design, tooling, and production of 194 high‑precision dipole magnets plus a first‑article prototype. Similar accelerator magnet programs have unit costs ranging from $200,000 to $500,000 depending on size, material, and testing requirements. Assuming an average of $300,000 per magnet, the total hardware cost would be roughly $58 million. Adding engineering, tooling, QA, and reporting overhead (≈15‑20 % of hardware cost) pushes the overall contract value into the $70‑$80 million range. Therefore a reasonable budget estimate is between $50 million and $100 million, reflecting uncertainties in exact unit pricing and potential cost‑saving value‑engineering proposals.
