The US Army is seeking information on potential solutions for a compact and lightweight energy storage and conversion system, designated as the Portable Energy Node (PEN). The PEN is intended to provide adaptable and resilient power directly to the front lines, with a focus on minimizing logistical burdens and maximizing operational flexibility. Key system elements include a power converter and controller, integrated energy storage units, and the ability to accept power from a wide array of sources. The system must be capable of operating in diverse environments and supporting a wide range of tactical equipment.
Some of the key requirements for the PEN include:
• Power output: 1kW for small PEN, 2-3kW for medium PEN, and 3-5kW for large PEN
• Energy storage: 1 kWh for small PEN, 2-3 kWh for medium PEN, and 3+ kWh for large PEN
• Input/output voltages: 24VDC, 120VAC/60Hz, and 100-250VAC 50/60Hz
• Weight: <51 lbs for small PEN, <102 lbs for medium PEN, and <140 lbs for large PEN
• Operational environments: cold, basic, and hot weather conditions
• Ruggedization: compliance with MIL-STD-810H or commercial equivalent standard for shock, vibration, and drop
• Interoperability: compatibility with common military and/or commercial power connectors and protocols
• Signature management: minimization of electromagnetic, thermal, audible, and visual signatures
