Description

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District intends to award a sole‑source contract to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish & Wildlife Research Institute for long‑term nekton (fish and macroinvertebrate) monitoring in the Lower St. Johns River and its tributaries. The work will support evaluation of ecological impacts from recent channel deepening, focusing on salinity changes, habitat shifts, and effects on commercially and recreationally important species. The effort will increase the resolution of nekton data across selected tidal tributaries and coves, providing critical information for future environmental assessments and management decisions. • Conduct systematic sampling of fish, shrimp, crab, and other nekton species in designated study areas (Trout, Arlington, Ortega rivers, Mill Cove, and upstream of Julington Creek). • Analyze relationships between channel deepening, salinity gradients, water quality, and nekton population dynamics. • Produce technical reports and data sets to inform USACE and partner agencies on ecological impacts and mitigation strategies.

Budget estimate

$300,000 – $800,000

No contract value is disclosed. Based on typical multi‑year environmental monitoring contracts for a river system of this size, a reasonable estimate would be between $300,000 and $800,000 total, depending on the duration (likely 1–3 years) and the scope of sampling, analysis, and reporting required.
