The National Park Service intends to award a single source justified cooperative agreement to Cornerstones Community Partnerships for the project "Conduct Preservation Treatments at the Historic Providence Townsite." The project aims to provide suitable treatment to assure the long-term preservation of the remaining structures at the Providence Townsite, which is a historic ghost town in the East Mojave Desert. The project includes training of public volunteers in the cyclic treatment of stone and concrete/plaster structures to ensure stability and preservation at the site. The project is expected to last for 27 months, from June 1, 2019, to September 30, 2021.
Some key aspects of the project include:
• The townsite has been mapped and original material evaluated, with about 90% of the remaining fabric of the seventy mapped features in poor condition.
• The project objective is to re-mortar, cap, and stabilize standing stone and adobe walls.
• The project will provide training to public volunteers and NPS staff in construction and stabilization methods for historical constructs.
• The project will benefit the public through increased capacity in understanding and interpreting unique examples of vernacular architectural construction types found throughout the southwestern deserts.
