Description

The NIH is forecasting a new RFA to fund a Tissue Procurement Center (TPC) that will expand the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network. The TPC will collect, process, store, and distribute high‑quality human tissue specimens from at least 200 healthy donors (including up to 10 special tissue cohorts) to enable functional analyses of somatic mosaicism. Awardees will collaborate with other SMaHT initiatives to ensure specimens meet the needs of downstream assays. The effort is a grant (R24) and is open to a wide range of public, nonprofit, and for‑profit entities, including tribal governments and foreign institutions. Funding instrument is a grant; no cost‑sharing required. The anticipated award timeline: posting 09/14/2026, application due 07/01/2027, award 05/01/2028, project start 05/01/2028. • Collect and biobank tissue samples from ≥200 healthy donors (including special cohorts). • Process, quality‑control, store, and ship specimens to SMaHT investigators. • Provide detailed metadata and support for high‑throughput omics assays. • Coordinate with other SMaHT Stage 2 initiatives to align sample needs. • Manage a secure, compliant biorepository adhering to NIH and federal regulations.

Budget estimate

$2,000,000 – $5,000,000

The forecast does not list an award ceiling, but NIH R24 mechanisms for large‑scale biorepositories typically range from a few million to several million dollars over a multi‑year period. Assuming a 3‑year effort, a reasonable ballpark is $2 M‑$5 M total, depending on the scale of specimen processing, staffing, and infrastructure required.
