Description

The NIH is issuing a forecasted Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the second stage of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network. The award will fund a single Genome Characterization Center (GCC) under a UM1 cooperative agreement (clinical trials not allowed). The center will generate functional data on somatic mutations identified in healthy and disease‑relevant human tissues, linking genotype to phenotype and advancing understanding of mosaicism in biology and disease. The effort will build on existing multi‑omic datasets generated in Stage 1 and will require expertise in high‑throughput sequencing, bioinformatics, functional genomics, and possibly model‑system validation. • One award (UM1 cooperative agreement) anticipated. • Estimated application response date: July 1 2027; award expected May 1 2028; project start May 1 2028. • Open to a broad range of entities (universities, non‑profits, for‑profit, tribal governments, etc.). • Funding instrument: Cooperative Agreement (CA). • No explicit budget ceiling; typical NIH large‑center UM1 awards range from $5 M–$10 M over several years. • No pre‑bid meeting, site visit, or mandatory question‑deadline listed. • Contact: SMaHT Program, email [email protected].

Budget estimate

$5,000,000 – $10,000,000

The forecast does not list a specific award ceiling. Based on historical NIH UM1 cooperative agreements for national genomics centers, funding typically ranges between $5 million and $10 million total over a 3‑5‑year project period. The lower bound reflects a modest 3‑year effort; the upper bound assumes a full 5‑year, multi‑disciplinary center with extensive sequencing and validation pipelines.
