Description

The National Institutes of Health is issuing a Request for Applications (RFA) to fund Stage 2 of the Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Program. The initiative seeks multidisciplinary teams to develop, optimize, validate, benchmark, and disseminate cost‑effective experimental and computational technologies for detecting somatic mutations and interpreting their functional impact. Awardees will work collaboratively with other Stage 2 projects to integrate validated tools into production pipelines, data releases, and community resources, accelerating research on how somatic mutations contribute to disease. • Target audience: a broad range of eligible entities (universities, non‑profits, small businesses, tribal governments, etc.) • Funding instrument: NIH grant (RFA) – no cost‑sharing required • Anticipated award period begins May 1 2028; application due July 1 2027 • No clinical trial (RM1) component allowed – focus on technology development and validation • Expected deliverables include robust assays, computational pipelines, benchmarking datasets, and open‑source software/tools for the research community.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $2,000,000

NIH RFA awards for technology‑development initiatives typically range from a few hundred thousand dollars to several million, depending on scope and team size. Given the multi‑disciplinary nature (experimental assays + computational pipelines) and the expectation to produce community‑wide resources, a reasonable estimate is $500,000 – $2,000,000 in total funding over the project period. Factors influencing the final amount include the number of collaborators, the breadth of technology platforms proposed, and the level of required validation data.
