Description

The Los Alamos National Laboratory is offering a technology licensing opportunity for a Hydrogen Contamination Detector. This device is a low-cost, real-time sensor that can detect tiny amounts of harmful contaminants in hydrogen fuel before they reach fuel-cell vehicles. The detector uses a special membrane and an internal water reservoir to stay sensitive even when measuring completely dry hydrogen. The technology has several key advantages, including true real-time monitoring, compatibility with fueling infrastructure, and protection of fuel-cell investments. The market applications for this technology include hydrogen production and distribution, fueling infrastructure, fuel-cell vehicle and equipment manufacturers, industrial hydrogen users, and backup power and energy systems. • The detector can detect contamination instantly for the 3 most severe fuel cell stack contaminants. • It works with dry hydrogen, eliminating the need to humidify the gas stream. • It is compatible with fueling infrastructure, using proven PEM fuel-cell components. • It protects fuel-cell investments by catching impurities early. • It enables the hydrogen economy by providing the reliability and safety assurance required for widespread adoption of hydrogen vehicles and refueling stations.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $2,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as the document does not specify a specific amount. However, considering the technology is a low-cost device and the market applications are primarily in the energy and utilities sector, a reasonable estimate could be in the range of $500,000 to $2 million. This estimation is based on the assumption that the licensing agreement would involve a one-time payment or a series of payments over a few years. The actual budget could be higher or lower, depending on the specific terms of the licensing agreement and the commercial success of the technology.
