Description

The US Army is seeking domestically sourced rare earth magnets for small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS). The magnets should have specific properties, such as a maximum energy product (BH)max of 49-53 MGOe, remanence (Br) of 1.42 - 1.48 Tesla, and intrinsic coercivity (Hcj) of >19 kOe. The magnets will be used in motors, with 14 magnets per motor, and the army is planning to manufacture 480,000 motors. The demand forecast for each motor is: 320,000 of the 2807’s, 80,000 of the 3115’s, and 80,000 of the 2407’s. • The magnets should be able to operate at temperatures up to 90 deg C. • The magnets should have a reversible loss of magnetic field strength (Br) of not more than -0.14% / deg C. • The coating is required for corrosion resistance, and alternate coatings may be proposed if they are compatible with mounting adhesives such as epoxy. • The pole orientation of the magnets should be centered in the arc segment in the radial direction.

Budget estimate

$50,000,000 – $100,000,000

The budget for this opportunity can be estimated based on the quantity of magnets required. The document mentions that 6,720,000 magnets are needed, and the cost of rare earth magnets can vary depending on the type and quality. Assuming an average cost of $10 per magnet, the total budget would be around $67,200,000. However, this is a rough estimate and the actual budget may be higher or lower, depending on the specific requirements and the bidding process. Factors that may influence the likely payment range include the cost of materials, labor, and manufacturing, as well as the level of competition and the army's budget for the project.
