Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking to replace and upgrade its existing 120 kW fuel cell capability at the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) by purchasing a commercially available fuel cell generator solution. The fuel cell system should be a turn-key Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell system that can be installed at ESIF and used to support energy integration research and development. The system should preferably include a scalable or modular system to allow easy future expansion/increased power output. The fuel cell will utilize stored hydrogen produced at ESIF and will supply electrical power to the ESIF Research Electrical Distribution Bus. The fuel cell solution may optionally provide combined heat and power take-off provisions.
Some key requirements and features of the fuel cell system include:
• A local, standalone cooling system
• DC/AC inverter capable of grid forming and stand-alone operation of AC microgrid
• Battery integration
• Black Start capability including standalone microgrid operation
• Power and Energy Management system with local control command for fuel cell balance of plant
• Outdoor installation with a container or outdoor modular unit provided by the supplier
