The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) seeks to advance its mission by supporting a consortium to phenotype 0-2 year old children with severe viral lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) with follow up until pre-school age for pulmonary sequelae. The consortium will include a Data and Analytics Coordinating Center (DACC), a Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC), a Biorepository, and four Clinical Centers (CCs). The objective of this program is to create a comprehensive understanding of the condition, predict its severity, and understand the reasons for hospitalization. Key aspects of the job include:
• Phenotyping 0-2 year old children with severe viral LRTI
• Follow-up until pre-school age for pulmonary sequelae
• Understanding the immature host respiratory immune response to viral infection
• Understanding the heterogeneity in response to different viruses
• Current interventions and significant practice variation in diagnosis and management
• Subsequent impact on lung health
