The Veteran Trades Apprenticeship Program aims to provide training opportunities for post-9/11 veterans in preservation trades, such as carpentry and masonry. The program will be implemented through a cooperative agreement with Conservation Legacy, and the National Park Service will provide substantial involvement and oversight. The program's goals include providing hands-on training, introducing participants to the National Park Service, and promoting resource stewardship. The skills and knowledge gained by participants will be applicable to careers in infrastructure maintenance and engineering, as well as resource and facility management.
Some key aspects of the program include:
• Recruitment of approximately 20 post-9/11 veterans to participate in the program
• A one-month cohort-based training program hosted by the Historic Preservation Training Center
• Immersion in active, working crews of preservation professionals to complete deferred and cyclic maintenance projects
• Specialized wrap-around services, including recruitment, support services, and measures to ensure participant success
• Opportunities for participants to engage with National Park Service personnel and receive classroom-style safety and skills training
