Description

The University of Louisville is seeking a qualified contractor to replace the existing 350 kW emergency generator at the Ekstrom Library with a new 400 kW owner‑furnished unit and to perform all associated electrical work, including demolition of existing equipment, installation of a new 600 A transfer switch, conduit, grounding, and emergency‑power systems. The project must be coordinated to minimize downtime, adhere to Kentucky building and fire codes, and be completed within a tight summer schedule. Bids are due electronically by 2 PM EST on 27 Mar 2026, with work slated to begin 11 May 2026 and finish by 3 Aug 2026. The award will be based on the lowest responsive and responsible bid, subject to bonding, insurance, and workers‑comp requirements. • Replace the 350 kW diesel generator with a 400 kW generator (owner‑furnished, contractor‑installed). • Provide new 600 A automatic transfer switches, upgrade electrical panels, conduit, grounding, and emergency lighting controls. • Perform demolition of existing generator, fuel tank, switchgear, and related infrastructure; restore finishes and coordinate phased power cut‑over. • Meet all applicable codes (Kentucky Building Code 2018, NFPA 70 2023, NFPA 110, etc.) and submit required shop drawings, cost breakdowns, and warranty documentation. • Must supply bid bond (5 % of bid), performance and payment bonds, workers‑comp affidavit, and certificates of insurance as part of the bid package.

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $1,500,000

No contract value is disclosed, but similar 400 kW generator replacement projects with full electrical upgrades on university campuses typically range from $500,000 to $1.5 million, depending on equipment cost, site‑specific civil work, and the extent of demolition and finish restoration. The estimate assumes a mid‑range generator price (~$250k–$350k) plus $200k–$400k for electrical labor, materials, and testing, plus contingency for unforeseen site conditions.
