Description

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA‑H) is announcing a Proposers’ Day on October 15, 2026 to introduce the UNIFYING Imaging with QUantum Entanglement (UNIQUE) program. The event will be hybrid (in‑person/online) and includes live Q&A, short lightning talks, and optional private sidebar meetings for networking and team formation. UNIQUE seeks to explore quantum‑derived imaging contrasts—leveraging entangled 511 keV photon pairs, positronium interactions, and quantum‑aware detectors—to add a new measurement dimension to biomedical imaging. The effort is split into two technical areas: (1) physical systems for generating/measuring quantum observables, and (2) AI‑driven reconstruction and multimodal data fusion. Participants are encouraged to register early (registration opens September 18, 2026) and may submit a single lightning‑talk slide by September 22, 2026, as well as a teaming profile to facilitate collaborations. Attendance is not mandatory for later proposal submission, but the agency expects multi‑partner teams. • Event date: October 15, 2026 (8:30 AM ET start) • Registration opens: September 18, 2026 (12:00 PM ET) – closes 48 hrs before event • Lightning‑talk slide deadline: September 22, 2026 • Primary contact: Wilfred Ngwa, Program Manager (UNIQUE@arpa‑h.gov) • Program focus: quantum‑based biomedical imaging, combining anatomy, function, molecular and quantum‑derived signals • Intended outcomes: feasibility demonstration of quantum observables for clinical imaging, creation of AI‑enabled reconstruction pipelines, and formation of interdisciplinary teams.

Budget estimate

$5,000,000 – $20,000,000

ARPA‑H’s innovative research programs typically award multi‑year contracts ranging from a few million to tens of millions of dollars, depending on scope and team size. Given the high‑risk, high‑reward nature of quantum biomedical imaging and the expectation of multi‑institution collaborations, a reasonable estimate for total funding is between $5 million and $20 million over the life of the effort. Factors influencing the final amount include the number of participating partners, the depth of hardware development, and the extent of AI‑driven software integration.
