Description

The Brain Repair of Any Injured Neural Structure (BRAINS) program is an initiative by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to develop technologies for regrowing brain tissue. The program aims to demonstrate the feasibility of reversing damage and disease in any part of the brain. The BRAINS Exploratory Topic will consist of two technical areas: generating precursor tissue for any brain region and optimizing surgical engraftment of precursor tissue into adult brains. The program will consist of two 9-month phases, with a performer down-selection at the end of Phase I. • The program will focus on developing methods for generating region-specific precursor tissue. • The program will also focus on demonstrating proof-of-concept for surgical engraftment in preclinical models. • The BRAINS program is complementary to the FRONT program, which focuses exclusively on neocortical tissue. • The program aims to advance technology for generating precursor tissue products that can restore function to damaged regions of the brain. • The program will collect participant questions and make them available in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section.

Budget estimate

$1,000,000 – $10,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is likely to be in the range of $1 million to $10 million, based on the fact that the program aims to demonstrate the feasibility of reversing damage and disease in any part of the brain, and that the BRAINS Exploratory Topic will consist of two 9-month phases. The actual budget will depend on the number of awards made and the amount of funding allocated to each award. The factors that may influence the likely payment range include the complexity of the research, the number of participants, and the duration of the program.
