The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking transdisciplinary research teams (3‑6 investigators) to develop mechanistic, biologically‑grounded explanations of how neural circuits generate central nervous system function, behavior, and mental experience. Teams must integrate (1) detailed characterization of circuit components (cell types, connectivity), (2) in‑vivo recordings with cellular‑scale temporal resolution, and (3) analysis of a tractable behavior or functional output. Proposals may also include development of novel tools, methods, or theoretical frameworks that bridge molecular, cellular, systems, and computational neuroscience. Up to five awards will be made, each with a ceiling of $8 million, to advance the BRAIN Initiative’s goal of multi‑level integration and standardization across the neuroscience community. Applicants must be U.S. entities (various government, nonprofit, for‑profit, and educational institutions) and will be required to submit data‑management and sharing plans, annual progress reports, and comply with NIH grant policies.
