The College of Charleston issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a waste characterization study to gather data on the composition of waste in the college's landfill-bound waste stream. The goal of the study is to develop a zero-waste action plan to achieve the college's goal of zero waste by 2035. The contract was awarded to SCS Engineers, who received the highest evaluated score. The scope of work includes conducting a comprehensive waste characterization and quantification by weight for each measured material type of landfill-bound waste, differentiating waste composition by different types of waste and within different sectors of the campus, and determining the types and quantities of potentially recoverable materials found in the landfill-bound waste.
• The study aims to gather waste composition data using a methodology that is statistically representative of the college's landfill waste stream.
• The contractor will conduct sorting events to collect and weigh samples of waste.
• The contractor will provide a detailed project plan and methodology for the study.
• The college's goal is to achieve zero waste by 2035.
