Description

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is issuing a cooperative‑agreement grant (RFA‑AI‑28‑015) to fund “last‑mile” implementation research for HIV prevention and treatment. The program seeks multidisciplinary collaborations to conduct effectiveness‑implementation trials—such as pragmatic, hybrid, or combined efficacy‑effectiveness studies—targeting diverse populations across the care continuum, including co‑infections and comorbidities. Up to ten awards are anticipated, with an estimated application response date of 18 Oct 2027 and award/project start in July 2028. Eligible applicants span a broad range of entities, from small businesses and nonprofits to tribal governments and foreign institutions. Funding will be provided as a Cooperative Agreement (CA) under the Public Health Service Act. • Focus: HIV implementation science, real‑world effectiveness trials, all ages and care settings. • Funding instrument: Cooperative Agreement (CA). • Anticipated number of awards: 10. • Estimated application deadline: 18 Oct 2027; award decision: 1 Jul 2028. • Eligible entities: wide spectrum including U.S. governmental units, NGOs, tribal entities, and foreign institutions. • Expected deliverables: trial protocols, implementation strategies, data on effectiveness, and translational insights for scaling HIV interventions.

Budget estimate

$1,000,000 – $5,000,000

NIH RFA cooperative agreements for multi‑site implementation trials typically range from $1 million to $5 million per award, depending on scope, number of sites, and duration. Given the “last‑mile” focus, the need for extensive real‑world data collection, and the allowance for up to ten awards, a reasonable estimate is $1‑5 M per award. Factors influencing the final amount include the number of participating sites, the complexity of the implementation design, and whether the award includes supplemental resources for community engagement.
