Description

This Funding Opportunity Notice (NOFO) invites applications for NIH R61/R33 phased‑innovation awards to develop and test novel HIV‑prevention interventions that also address alcohol use. The R61 phase funds feasibility, adaptation, and pilot testing; the R33 phase funds expanded efficacy, implementation, and dissemination studies for interventions that meet R61 milestones. Eligible applicants include a broad range of public, nonprofit, tribal, and for‑profit entities. The award is anticipated to begin April 1 2028. • Supports milestone‑driven HIV‑prevention research with an alcohol‑use component. • Two‑phase structure: R61 (development/pilot) → R33 (larger‑scale testing). • Open to diverse applicants (state, tribal, nonprofit, for‑profit, etc.). • Estimated application deadline September 7 2027; award expected March 1 2028. • Funding instrument: Grant (NIH R61/R33).

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $2,000,000

NIH does not publish a specific award ceiling for this NOFO, but typical R61 awards range up to $250,000 per year for up to 2 years (≈ $500 k total) and R33 awards can reach $1 million–$1.5 million over a 3‑year period. Assuming a successful transition from R61 to R33, the total funding could fall between roughly $0.5 million and $2 million, depending on scope, milestones, and negotiated budgets.
