RFI - Protection Before Day One Vaccine: Seasonal Influenza Vaccines with Pandemic Coverage

The Center for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) is seeking information on the development of seasonal influenza vaccines that can provide protection against pandemic influenza viruses. The goal is to identify vaccine candidates that can provide protection before the onset of a pandemic, known as "Day One" vaccines. These vaccines should be able to deliver seasonal influenza protection and provide partial protection against emerging pandemic influenza viruses. The RFI is looking for information on vaccine candidates, including their development maturity, technical feasibility, manufacturing readiness, and regulatory considerations. Key aspects of the opportunity include: • Development of broadly protective vaccine designs • Use of adjuvants to enhance breadth and durability • Mucosal or alternative delivery strategies • Combination strategies incorporating broadly protective components into licensed seasonal vaccines • Novel correlates of protection and immune-bridging strategies • Enabling preclinical models or controlled human infection models supporting breadth of protection claims • Regulatory pathways for dual seasonal-pandemic benefit
