CT Scanner and Related Products & Services

The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner is seeking a high-resolution Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner to enhance diagnostic accuracy in determining the cause and manner of death. The scanner will integrate with existing forensic workflows and provide advanced imaging capabilities for human identification, detection of subtle injuries, and production of high-quality digital evidence for legal cases. The objectives of this project include determining the cause and manner of death, facilitating human identification, detecting subtle or extensive injuries, providing evidence for legal cases, and optimizing procedural efficiency. Some key features of the project include: • Utilizing advanced imaging of dental records, orthopedic implants, and unique anatomical markers to establish or confirm decedent identity • Detecting subtle injuries like hairline fractures, soft tissue damage that might be missed during a traditional autopsy • Producing standardized, high-quality, and repeatable digital evidence suitable for expert testimony and admissible in judicial proceedings • Using precise imaging to guide targeted dissections, potentially reducing the necessity for extensive invasive procedures while maintaining comprehensive investigative standards The project requires a high-resolution CT Scanner and related products and services, and the anticipated installation of the CT Scanner is July 2027.
