Description

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is issuing a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the OJP FY 2026 Special Attorneys Program (Round 10). The grant supports state, local, Tribal, and territorial prosecuting agencies to assign or hire qualified prosecutors, criminal investigators, analysts, forensic accountants, and related staff as “cross‑designated” Special Attorneys or Special Assistant United States Attorneys. These personnel remain employed by their home agencies but will investigate and prosecute fraud, drug, human‑trafficking, and other crimes committed by criminal aliens within the United States. Funding may also cover criminal investigators and analytical staff. The program aims to strengthen investigative and prosecutorial capacity, improve inter‑governmental coordination, and enhance the ability to combat gang activity, fraud, and trafficking. Up to $3 million in cooperative‑agreement funding is available, with an open period from 14 Oct 2026 to 28 Oct 2026. • Federal grant (Cooperative Agreement) for law‑enforcement capacity building. • Open to state, local, Tribal, and territorial prosecuting agencies (and other local government units). • Funds can be used to hire or assign prosecutors, criminal investigators, forensic accountants, analysts, and related staff. • Personnel remain with their home agency but work under direction of the National Fraud Enforcement Division, Criminal Division, or U.S. Attorney’s Offices. • Supports investigations of fraud, drug, and human‑trafficking crimes involving criminal aliens. • Award ceiling $3 M; no minimum floor. • Application window: 14 Oct 2026 – 28 Oct 2026. • Expected ~100 applications. • No pre‑bid meeting, site visit, or Q&A deadline listed.

Budget estimate

$250,000 – $3,000,000

The NOFO lists an award ceiling of $3 million with no floor, indicating that individual grants could range from modest single‑project awards to the full ceiling. Given the program’s scope—supporting multiple full‑time or part‑time special attorneys, investigators, and analytical staff—typical award sizes are likely between $250,000 and $3,000,000, depending on the size of the applicant agency and the number of personnel funded. Smaller jurisdictions may receive under $500 k, while larger multi‑jurisdictional consortia could approach the ceiling.
