Description

The Stimulate Utilization of Plentiful Energy in Rocks through High-temperature Original Technologies (SUPERHOT) program aims to boost baseload power supply by enabling future power production from superhot geothermal resources. The program focuses on two subject areas: robust well construction and transfer of heat from the surrounding geologic formation to the well. The goal is to support research and development of new technologies to enable scalable superhot geothermal by addressing major technical challenges. Key aspects of the program include: • Expansion beyond natural hydrothermal systems using Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) and Advanced Geothermal Systems (AGS) • Development of technologies for scalable superhot geothermal • Focus on robust well construction and heat transfer • Potential for 10-20 GW of baseload power with a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) less than $30 per megawatt hour (MWh) by 2040 • Support for small businesses and other eligible applicants • Requirement for applicants to submit a commercialization plan and agree to special provisions for reporting and intellectual property.
