Description

The National Park Service intends to award a cooperative agreement to Utah State University for a project to understand the role of increasing water quality and groundwater inputs on ecosystem structure, function, and health in Big Bend National Park. The project aims to identify and describe the best management practices to ensure a healthy and productive fishery and fish community within the Rio Grande. The project will investigate the fish community, quantify and compare organic inputs, and track available food resources over time. The recipient will acquire all necessary permits for park research and research on a state waterbody and carry out the statement of work in accordance with the terms and conditions stated in the agreement. Some key aspects of the project include: • Measuring abiotic and biotic factors describing water quality and ecosystem health • Sampling fish to investigate the fish community, condition, and structure • Measuring primary and secondary productivity and tracking available food resources over time • Quantifying and comparing productivity inputs • Determining fish community relationships with primary and secondary producers The project will utilize science to identify best practices to manage and maintain a popular park and fishery, ensuring the public has access to recreational opportunities involving birdwatching, fishing, and boating.
