Description

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is publicizing its intent to award a sole-source modification to Spire Global Subsidiary, Inc. for the acquisition of 12 additional months of Period of Performance (PoP) extension from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. The original contract was awarded as a result of competitive procedures under Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) BAA-NOAA-HyMS-2022. The requirement is a follow-on to a competitively awarded R&D mission, and Spire Global is currently the only source with a space-qualified HyMS sensor in orbit. • The contract is for the in-orbit demonstration and data acquisition of a Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder (HyMS). • The HyMS sensor is space-qualified and launched on January 11, 2026. • The 16U platform is uniquely configured to support the specialized thermal management and power distribution required by the HyMS payload. • Continuity of this specific data stream is critical to capture seasonal atmospheric variations required to validate the impact of this technology on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models.

Budget estimate

$10,000,000 – $50,000,000

The budget for this contract is not explicitly stated in the document. However, considering the contract is for a 12-month extension of an existing R&D mission and involves the acquisition of data from a space-qualified HyMS sensor, the budget could be substantial. The cost of launching and operating a satellite, as well as the cost of developing and maintaining the HyMS sensor, could be in the tens of millions of dollars. Additionally, the contract is for a sole-source modification, which may indicate that the government is willing to pay a premium to ensure continuity of the data stream. Therefore, a rough estimate for the budget could be between $10 million and $50 million.
