Description

The Ellis Elementary Traffic Calming Project aims to slow vehicle speeds and provide safer crossings on routes near Ellis Elementary and surrounding schools. The project involves proposed interventions along Walnut Avenue, at the intersection of Humboldt Avenue with Munroe Street/Humboldt Court, and the intersection of Harold/Crawford/Abbotsford Street. The project includes raised crossings, raised intersections, and curb extensions. The project may affect, but is not likely to adversely affect, the Indiana bat, northern long-eared bat, or tricolored bat. The project proponent must implement avoidance and minimization measures, including ensuring all operators and contractors are aware of environmental commitments, directing temporary lighting away from suitable habitat, and modifying the project to avoid tree removal/trimming in excess of what is required. Some key points to consider: • The project is located in Massachusetts, and the lead federal agency is the Federal Highway Administration. • The project may affect the tricolored bat, which is proposed for listing as endangered under the ESA. • The project proponent must ensure that all tree removal/trimming is limited to that specified in project plans and occurs within 100 ft of the road/rail surface, and is outside of documented habitat for the Indiana bat, NLEB, and TCB. • The project includes a suite of MassDOT-funded interventions, including raised crossings, raised intersections, and curb extensions. • The project may involve the removal or trimming of trees, and the project proponent must ensure that this is done in accordance with the avoidance and minimization measures.
