Description

The Department of Energy is seeking to license its technology for Enhanced Frequency Response for Run-of-River Hydropower Plants. This technology is designed to improve the frequency response of run-of-river hydropower plants by integrating energy storage systems. The technology has several key advantages, including improved frequency response, energy storage optimization, guaranteed stability, and versatility. The technology can be applied to small hydropower plants, microgrid developers, energy storage solutions, and government and research institutions. • Improved frequency response through advanced control architecture • Energy storage optimization to prevent overcharge/discharge and enable recharge capabilities • Guaranteed stability through bounded integral control • Integrated solution combining frequency and current/voltage control • Versatility in application to other renewable systems, including solar, wind, and marine energy microgrids

Budget estimate

$500,000 – $5,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate, as it is a licensing agreement rather than a traditional contract. However, the technology has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and stability of run-of-river hydropower plants, which could lead to substantial cost savings and revenue increases for the plants. A rough estimate for the budget could be in the range of $500,000 to $5 million, depending on the scope and terms of the licensing agreement.
