Description

The Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking partners to commercialize a new technology platform that leverages van der Waals materials to generate and manipulate structured light beams with tunable wavelength and orbital angular momentum. The technology has potential applications in integrated photonics, quantum communication, and optical sensing. The ideal partner would have expertise in metasurfaces, vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers, and/or two-dimensional system integration. The partnership would involve integration of the technology into metasurface and vertically-integrated photonic architectures, demonstration of high-efficiency, broadly-tunable, free space OAM beam generation on-chip, and application development in quantum light generation and optical/quantum communication systems. Some key points to consider are: • The technology enables the free tuning of wavelength, orbital angular momentum, and radial index across a broad spectral range. • It integrates into compact, planar, nanophotonic platforms. • It supports seamless compatibility with metasurfaces and similar nanophotonic devices. • It delivers high nonlinear conversion efficiency in a minimal volume. • It eliminates the need for bulky optical components such as spatial light modulators and bulk nonlinear crystals. • It enables both quantum and classical applications in integrated optics.

Budget estimate

$100,000 – $1,000,000

The budget for this opportunity is difficult to estimate as it is a technology licensing opportunity and not a traditional contract. However, the potential budget could be substantial if the technology is successfully commercialized. The budget could be in the form of royalties or a one-time licensing fee. The estimate of the budget range is $100,000 to $1,000,000, depending on the terms of the licensing agreement and the success of the commercialization effort.
