Description

The Smart Red Blood Cells (Smart-RBC) program aims to engineer red blood cells to contain novel biological features that can safely, temporarily, and reliably alter human physiology. The program will focus on two use cases: increasing exercise tolerance and accelerating hemostasis. Proposers are expected to submit an abstract, and if selected, an Oral Proposal Package (OPP) and participate in an oral presentation. The program will be conducted over 36 months, with multiple awards anticipated. Key aspects of the program include: * Engineering red blood cells to contain novel biological circuits * Increasing exercise tolerance and accelerating hemostasis * Ensuring safety of modified red blood cells * Developing a platform for future use cases * Collaboration with a testing and evaluation team * Regulatory engagement and adherence to human subjects research policies

Budget estimate

$1,000,000 – $10,000,000

Based on the total funding available for the program, which is approximately $35.1M, and the anticipation of multiple awards, the budget for each award is likely to be in the range of $1M to $10M. This estimate is rough and may vary depending on the number of awards and the scope of work for each project. Factors that may influence the budget range include the complexity of the proposed solution, the experience and qualifications of the proposer, and the potential impact of the project on the field of biotechnology and human physiology.
